Ο Jean-Gabriel Périot (γεν. 1974) είναι Γάλλος κινηματογραφιστής, ευρέως αναγνωρισμένος ως μία από τις πιο ξεχωριστές φωνές του σύγχρονου found-footage κινηματογράφου. Αυτοδίδακτος, ανέπτυξε το κινηματογραφικό του ύφος κατά τη διάρκεια της πρακτικής του άσκησης στα Αρχεία του Κέντρου Pompidou, όπου άρχισε να εργάζεται εντατικά με ιστορικό και σύγχρονο οπτικό υλικό. Το έργο του χαρακτηρίζεται από ένα ιδιότυπο μοντάζ που διερευνά ζητήματα βίας, ιστορίας και αναπαράστασης, συχνά μέσα από γρήγορα φωτομοντάζ και δημιουργική επανεπεξεργασία αρχειακών εικόνων.
Τα τελευταία είκοσι χρόνια, ο Périot έχει σκηνοθετήσει πολυάριθμες ταινίες μικρού μήκους στα όρια μεταξύ ντοκιμαντέρ, μυθοπλασίας και πειραματικού κινηματογράφου. Ανάμεσα στα πιο αναγνωρισμένα έργα του συγκαταλέγονται τα Dies Irae, Even If She Had Been a Criminal…, Nijuman no borei (200,000 Phantoms) και The Devil, ταινίες που έχουν τιμηθεί με βραβεία σε φεστιβάλ σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Η πρώτη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία του, Une jeunesse allemande (A German Youth, 2015)—μια εντυπωσιακή αρχειακή αφήγηση για την RAF—άνοιξε την ενότητα Panorama της Berlinale και απέσπασε πολλές διεθνείς διακρίσεις μετά την έξοδό της σε αίθουσες στη Γαλλία, τη Γερμανία και την Ελβετία. Η επόμενη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία μυθοπλασίας του, Summer Lights, έκανε πρεμιέρα στο Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου του Σαν Σεμπαστιάν το 2017, ενώ το ντοκιμαντέρ του Our Defeats παρουσιάστηκε στην ενότητα Forum της Berlinale 2019.
Η πιο πρόσφατη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία του, Returning to Reims (2021)—ντοκιμαντέρ βασισμένο στο σημαντικό βιβλίο του Didier Eribon και με τη συμμετοχή της Adèle Haenel—έκανε πρεμιέρα στη Δεκαπενθήμερη των Σκηνοθετών στις Κάννες. Η ταινία τιμήθηκε με το Βραβείο César Καλύτερου Ντοκιμαντέρ το 2023.

Jean-Gabriel Périot (born 1974) is a French filmmaker widely recognized as one of the most remarkable voices in contemporary found-footage cinema. An autodidact, he developed his cinematic practice while interning at the Centre Pompidou Archives, where he began working intensively with historical and contemporary visual materials. His work is driven by a distinctive editing style that confronts questions of violence, history, and representation, often through rapid photomontage and the creative re-appropriation of archival footage.
Over the past two decades, Périot has directed numerous short films at the intersection of documentary, fiction, and experimental cinema. Among his celebrated works are Dies Irae, Even If She Had Been a Criminal…, Nijuman no borei (200,000 Phantoms) and The Devil, all of which have received awards at festivals worldwide.
Périot’s first feature-length film, Une jeunesse allemande (A German Youth, 2015)—a striking archival chronicle of the RAF—opened the Panorama section of the Berlinale and went on to receive several international distinctions following its release in France, Germany, and Switzerland. His subsequent fiction feature, Summer Lights, premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2017, while his documentary Our Defeats was presented in the Forum section of the 2019 Berlinale.
His most recent feature, Returning to Reims (2021)—a documentary adaptation of Didier Eribon’s seminal book and featuring Adèle Haenel—premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. The film received the César Award for Best Documentary in 2023.
